Communication Builds Our Community

Northwest Community Market Draws Crowds, Rave Reviews

A light breeze and sunshine made for a pleasant day May 1 for the first Northwest Community Market.

Vendors filled the large lots at the corner of B Street and Lincoln Avenue, offering a variety of apparel, products, services and food.

The event was hosted as a partnership between the Lincoln Community Development Corporation and the City of Lake Wales Community Redevelopment Agency.

CDC President Sara Jones said she was pleased with the turnout as well as the number and diversity of vendors. The event also included a bounce house and other activities for children.

The event was themed "Revitalization Rooted in History," and was promoted with the hashtag Bring Back Lincoln. The CDC is a nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing the northwest community's business district.

Some attendees got their first look at a street mural a block west of the market that honors 15 families, who helped establish Lincoln Avenue. The brightly colored mural features the head of a lion to signify strength and community.

A groundbreaking to kick off an affordable housing initiative took place on lots just north of the market, just prior to opening.
