Communication Builds Our Community

Breakfast Rotary Hosts 8th Girls' Camp

What has 64 excited fourth and fifth grade girls, 16 special counselor and lots of fun packed into a weekend at Lake Aurora Christian Camp? Lake Wales Breakfast Rotary Club's Girls' Camp.

The club fundraises each year with its Share the Wealth Calendar sale, corporate sponsorships and grants from Florida's Natural Growers Foundation and Rotary's Camp Florida to help us sponsor this camp.

This past weekend, Feb. 15-17, was the 8th annual Girls' Camp. Girls were selected by their schools by being team players, cooperative, respectful, and all-around good kids at school. Counselors are young professional women from our community who are role models and mentors to the girls throughout the weekend.

The counselors take the theme, "I AM SMART, BEAUTIFUL, FUN, IMPORTANT AND UNIQUE," and talk about this all weekend.

Hayrides, s'mores, archery, ziplining, peddle cars, painting, drumming, and tomahawk throw are some of the activities the girls are engaged in throughout the weekend.

The second night culminates with a glamour night where girls have their hair decorated with ribbon and braids, their nails painted and have sparkly eye liner applied. Then, they get to have group and individual pictures made. And of course, after you're all "glammed up", it's time to dance!

On Sunday, Dr. Jim Moyer, a Rotarian, always provides an inspirational message to the girls and then each group performs a short skit about their weekend.

It's a packed weekend where girls can be girls, make new friends, find out just how special they are, try some new activities, and have fun.

Many thanks to our Rotarians, volunteers from Lake Wales High School Interact Club and Southeastern University, friends and everyone who made this weekend a special time for a great group of girls.
