Spring Kite Festival to Take the Skies Over Lake Wailes

A colorful, air-borne sight will fill the skies in one part of town soon, as Lake Wales enjoys its first-ever Spring Kite Festival. The high-flying event is planned for noon on Saturday, March 30, and everyone is invited to participate.

"We couldn't let another March slip past without doing this!" said Jessica Bray, a member of the sponsoring Lakeshore League. The informal neighborhood group is noted for organizing themed events at different times of the year, including such activities as Kentucky Derby Day and door-to-door Christmas caroling.

The informal Spring Kite Festival will take place in Lake Wailes Park beginning at noon.

UPDATE: Due to weather conditions, kites will be flown from the east end of the lake, at Long Point, opposite Kiwanis Park. Parking is located at the trailhead. -

"The point is to avoid the trees," Bray said. "It all depends upon the weather, of course," she added. "If it's bad, we will postpone the event until Sunday. We may not have a huge number of kites, but it will be guaranteed fun."

Hand-flown kites of every form will be allowed to participate, but kite flyers are encouraged to respect the air-space of their neighbors.
