US Rep. Darren Soto to Address Lake Wales Area Democratic Club

Lake Wales Area Democrats will have an opportunity to share a conversation with Congressman Darren Soto (FL-9) on Tuesday, September 14 when he visit with the local group via a Zoom linkup. Rep. Soto recently announced he, like many in Congress, has tested positive for Covid-19, so the virtual meeting allows safety for all attendees.

Soto is expected to speak about the newly-passed bi-partisan infrastructure bill, which he strongly supported. It is aimed at addressing the failing infrastructure of the nations' roads, bridges, and dams, while also speeding new job-creating technologies.

Soto is also an advocate of addressing climate change, which scientists are increasingly blaming for the massive fires, intense storms and unprecedented flooding that is happening not only in the US but globally. Legislation is pending in the House of Representatives that would back a Senate bill funding adaptive changes and setting the stage for increased use of renewable energy, electric vehicles, and smart energy-management technology.

The Covid-19 resurgence is also likely to be a topic of discussion as Florida suffers through record infection rates, hospitalizations and deaths due to the Delta variant. Doctors and epidemiologists are alarmed that an even more-dangerous variant, known as Mu, has arrived in Florida. Some fear that it has the ability to more easily overcome immunities, The Mu variant has become the dominant strain in Colombia and Ecuador, where it has spread rapidly. Soto has confirmed that he has been fully vaccinated, and is experiencing only mild Covid-19 Symptoms.

Those in attendance will have an opportunity to ask questions of the Congressman. For more information residents are invited to visit the club's website where they may register in advance to attend the meeting.
