Seniors Invited to Compete in Annual Olympic-Style Games

Seniors who are feeling that competitive edge and want to show their best moves against a field of peers have their best opportunity of the year fast approaching. Registration for the 31st Annual Polk Senior Games will open January 2 for those wishing to participate in a long list of athletic endeavors.

The Games, scheduled for February 24 through March 9, offer a two-week series of 97 Olympic-style events in 38 athletic and recreational sports. They attract over 2,100 men and women, 50 and over, with a variety of skills - the serious competitor, the fun at heart, the seasoned athlete, the late bloomer, and the physically challenged. The purpose of the Games is to promote friendly competition, fellowship, health and wellness, an active lifestyle, and volunteerism.

Events are held at various locations throughout Polk County, offering competition in archery, shooting, basketball 3 on 3, billiards, bocce, bowling, team bowling, bridge, chess, cribbage, ballroom and social dancing, square dancing, darts, euchre, field events, fishing, golf - 18 hole singles and 18 hole mixed doubles and putt & chip, horseshoes, pepper, pickleball, powerlifting, punt pass kick, road race 5k, scrabble, senior smarts, shooting – pistol, rifle, skeet, sporting clays and trap, shuffleboard, softball, sudoku, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track, and walking. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in each event and age division.

The individual entry fee is $12 for the first event and $5 for each additional event up to a maximum of $37. Fees for team sports are $150 for Softball, $60 for Basketball 3 on 3, $48 for Team Bowling. There are also facility fees for Golf, Archery, Pickleball, Shooting and Bowling. Entries must be received by Friday, February 19. Everyone receives a T-shirt.
