A street ride on a homemade go-cart on Alturas-Babson Park Cutoff Road (ABC Road) ended in tragedy for two men Saturday night.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call around 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 24th, about a collision between the cart and a Hyundai Elantra on the Bartwo segment of ABC Road
According to traffic homicide investigators, a 33-year-old man who lives in the area was operating the go-cart with a 38-year-old male passenger. As the pair were traveling west on ABC Road, the driver slowed to turn left onto a private driveway and they were struck from behind by the Hyundai, which was being driven west by a 21-year-old Lakeland woman.
The driver was completely ejected and suffered significant injuries. He was airlifted to a local hospital, where he is in critical condition. The passenger was partially ejected,and suffered fatal injuries. The driver of the Hyundai was not physically injured and remained at the scene.
The initial investigation report did not indicate whether the cart was street legal or equipped with lights or mirrors. The investigation is ongoing.
