I thoroughly enjoyed the latest Mission: Impossible movie, Final Reckoning, directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise. This film is a direct sequel to Dead Reckoning (released two years ago) but also ties together plot threads from across the entire franchise. While I haven't seen all the Mission: Impossible films, I did catch Dead Reckoning, so that was more than enough to dive into this one.
This movie is a lot of fun. Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his team face off against a rogue AI supercomputer-along with various factions within the U.S. government and other shadowy players all vying to control it. The danger comes from every direction, keeping the stakes high throughout.
One of the standout sequences involves an intense underwater mission aboard a submarine, which was very compelling. There's also an aerial battle between two biplanes that showcases the franchise's trademark commitment to practical stunts and jaw-dropping action. The choreography and stunt work throughout are top-tier.
The acting is solid across the board. I especially enjoyed performances from Haley Atwell, Simon Pegg, and Angela Bassett. The film balances humor, heart, and high-stakes tension effectively, with plenty of memorable lines and moments. It also makes excellent use of its global locations, including breathtaking scenes in Italy and South Africa.
The ending wraps things up wel. It feels like a finale but leaves just enough open to suggest more could come. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Ethan Hunt again, despite all the indications that this is supposed to be the last one.
If you've enjoyed previous Mission: Impossible films, you'll definitely want to see this one. It's a thrilling ride and Tom Cruise is doing his thing delivering high octane entertainment. The film is currently screening at Regal Cinemas 12 Eagle Ridge Mall in Lake Wales.
5 out of 5 stars. Go see it.
