Pioneer Days features exhibits of primitive arts and crafts, reenactments, and performances, along with lots of food, entertainment, and activities. The Pioneer Hour is a highlight of the two-day event held the last weekend of October.

The annual Pioneer of the Year Award recognizes a resident who has played an instrumental role in shaping the cultural, civic, and historical landscape of Lake Wales. The Lake Wales History Museum awards the honor each year, a tradition begun almost 50 years ago.

"As the Lake Wales History Museum approaches its own 50th anniversary, it's more important than ever to honor the individuals whose stories helped build this community," said Brandon Alvarado, President of the Board of Directors for the Lake Wales History Museum. "The Pioneer of the Year Award allows us to preserve and share the legacies of those who shaped Lake Wales for future generations to appreciate."

To be eligible, individuals must have lived in Lake Wales for at least half a century and "exemplify a lifetime of service, passion, and dedication to the community."

Any member of the community wishing to advance a nomination should submit a narrative of up to 500 words describing the nominee's lasting impact and achievements. Each nomination should also include at least three high-resolution photographs that reflect the nominee's involvement in the community over the years.

All nominations must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, September 12, 2025. Submissions may be completed online at the History Museum's website..

The award will be presented during the museum's annual Pioneer Days Festival at the Pioneer Hour ceremony, taking place on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 10 a.m.

The Lake Wales History Museum invites all residents to help recognize the people whose stories are deeply woven into the city's past and future. For full nomination guidelines and additional information, please visit http://www.lakewaleshistory.org.
