Museum Hosts Seminole Indian Lecture April 25

The Lake Wales Museum will host its next speaker series presentation at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 25.

The Florida Humanities Council presentation by Andrew Frank will be Modern by Tradition: Innovation and the Transformation of Seminole Culture.

Between 1700 and the present, the culture of the Florida Seminoles has remained remarkably connected to its roots while also innovating in dramatic fashion.

This lecture explores this dynamic to show how the Seminoles have embraced this dualism of being both modern and traditional. It examines, among other things, their origin stories, dress, cuisine, housing, ceremonial life, and family life.

The lecture program is free to the public and light refreshments are included. Please RSVP to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/speaker-series-transformation-of-the-seminole-culture-by-andrew-frank-tickets-57288953803

Frank's presentation complements the current museum exhibit "Postcards and Perceptions: Florida Seminoles and Tourism" by The Ah-Ta-Thi-Ki Museum, on display until May 31

Postcards serve as guideposts to the changes of early 20th century Florida history. Their simple, yet evocative imagery reveals the adaptive nature of the Seminole people. They reveal the complex pressures and adjustments Seminoles endured to assert their identity.
