Cancer Patients Benefit From "Cleaning for a Reason"

As Breast Cancer Awareness month is observed in October it draws attention to a treatable disease that remains one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States. Facing a diagnosis of cancer and the effects of treatment is a challenge for thousands of Florida residents, including many in the Lake Wales area.

The challenge of maintaining a home while undergoing treatment is overwhelming for many, especially for those who live alone, but there is n affordable source for help.

Cleaning for a Reason is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that offers free home cleaning to cancer patients in the United States and Canada. They have served over 40,000 patients nationwide and generated over $15 million dollars in donated cleanings with a goal of removing the burden of cleaning from those recovering from surgery, in active treatment, or in hospice, so that they may focus on their health, and be able to spend valuable time with loved ones.

Locally, Qualified Cleaning Service has partnered with Cleaning for a Reason "for about two years now," according to Megan Schmidt, general manager of the service.

"We offer two free cleanings, about three hours on each cleaning, and there have been times when we've offered more when they really needed help," Schmidt said. She added that the company has been involved in the effort for the last two years and has provided free cleaning services to "about a couple hundred" homes during that time.

Nationwide, Cleaning for a Reason claims to have served some 44,750 homes since its founding.
