Communication Builds Our Community
An event designed to share healthcare and vital resources with the broader community will give residents a chance to learn and take advantage of many free services, ranging from health screenings to free cookies and snacks..
The Community Resource Fair will take place on March 11th from 10am to 12pm at the Lake Wales Library. A dozen vendors will set up throughout the library lobby, as well as along the front entrance sidewalk, according to Christine Runyon, the library's Administrative Assistant.
The Lake Wales Public Library is located at 290 Cypress Garden Lane, downtown Lake Wales.
"Families are encouraged to attend," Runyon said. "We will have healthy snacks as well as cookies, and maybe some other things. We will have a map designed to assist patrons in visiting each vendor booth as well, to give a run-down of what the event will offer. We will also have racks set-up with books on wellness for patrons to check out."
Healthcare organizations including Bay Care, Tri County, and BayCare Faith Community Nursing will be present to offer services.
Bay Care will be offering free health screenings, while Tri County will offer info on medication safety for children and distribute medicine lock boxes. UF IFAS Extension Services will be making healthy snacks and sharing nutrition information, and BayCare Faith Community Nursing will educate on nutrition and heart health.
The Lake Wales Family Literacy Academy will share information about their free GED and ESOL learning services.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office will have a table with information about internet safety and crime prevention.
Removing the Barriers, an organization dedicated to improving experiences for the handicapped, will have games set up outside. Citrus Connection will be present to offer public transportation information, and the Florida Native Plant Society will also be there educating the public about our native plants.
"Of course the Lake Wales Library Association will be present for a membership drive. This is the nonprofit that helps keep our library going," Runyon said. "The Polk County Library Cooperative, which handled the outreach for this event, will be here for family-friendly activities and library info."
