The construction of Slim Chickens rose quickly from an empty lot adjacent to Dyer Kia during October. The restaurant is one of three new fast-food outlets opening in the city.

The growing population of Lake Wales is a primary justification for the investments being made by the several restaurant chains, according to local officials.

Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers and Slim Chickens are both nearing completion and expected to open within weeks.

According to their corporate website, Freddy's is a ten-year-old chain that features a wide variety of sandwiches, along with chicken tenders, desserts, and sides including onion rings and cheese curds. The franchise location will open soon next to Chili's.

Slim Chickens is also nearing completion on a site between Dyer Kia and the Hampton Inn. It will offer a menu including tenders and wings. Sandwiches, wraps, salads, and "chicken and waffles," along with "Southern sides." The chain has locations across the US and 12 existing Slim Chickens locations in Florida, including Tampa, Bradenton, Sarasota, and Wesley Chapel.

The continued expansion of restaurant choices in Lake Wales will take another step forward with the opening of three new outlets on US 27 near Eagle Ridge Mall. They follow other new restaurants that have opened on SR 60 and downtown. More are anticipated, according to business sources.

Meanwhile, an anticipated Starbucks location adjacent to Wawa has been shelved, and the site is now planned to host a Culver's restaurant. That chain, now more than 700 strong, grew from a single location in Sauk City, Wisconsin, serving their trademark "ButterBurgers" and frozen custard.

Other construction in the area of US 27 and the mall include a new "Take Five" oil change service being built next to Aldi's supermarket.
