Vaughn Cofer, 1928-2023

Vaughn Cofer of Babson Park passed away Saturday, June 17, 2023 at George G. Forsythe Hospice House in Auburndale.

She was born October 14, 1928 in Glade Hill, Virginia to the late Ulis and Nannie Powell; she moved to Babson Park from Frostproof in 1958. Vaughn worked as secretary, environmental teacher, and substitute teacher for the Polk County School System for 10 years.

She then worked for 10 years as a staff writer and family news writer for the Daily Highlander where she wrote a feature a week and did much pagination, general rewriting, and typing of articles for the paper daily.

Once the Daily Highlander stopped publishing, Vaughn returned to the school system and worked as secretary in the guidance department of McLaughlin Middle School. Vaughn was a member of the Babson Park Women's Club, the Lake Wales Little Theater, and the Frostproof Historical Society and was a charter member of the Ridge Poetry Association. She also authored a book of poetry called "Leap Into Night's Pocket."

Vaughn was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Cofer in 1994; and brothers, Elton Powell and Edgar Powell. She is survived by her sons, Kenneth Cofer of Babson Park, Kerry Cofer of Clearwater, Keith Cofer of Haines City, and Kevin Cofer of Babson Park; five grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her puppy.

A visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until the funeral service at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, June 22, 2023 at Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales
